In 2007, Tie Weavers celebrated 40 years of specialist weaving in South Africa. Having originally started as a blanket weaver in 1941, 1967 was the year that the company converted to weaving of school tie fabric. Using antiquated shuttle looms that wove around 4 metres of fabric per day, the factory, located in Pietermaritzburg became the local supplier to the school tie industry. Prior to this, all tie fabric had been imported from either Germany or England. The factory continued to be a little craft-type business until 1985 when Ivor Spiro purchased it and realized the opportunity of modernizing the machinery and improving the quality of the fabric woven.
The next major development occurred in 1993, when Ivor took the development of the factory to the next stage by investing in a Jacquard weaving loom, allowing the weaving of corporate and sporting ties. It took nearly three years to start producing tie fabric of the quality that was required to replace the fabric previously imported from Europe. However, growth thereafter was way beyond expectation. Today, TWSA has the most sophisticated designing and weaving technology, operating from a fully self-contained factory in Sandton, where every piece of fabric woven is world class in both design and manufacture.
